Say Yes to Software Updates

Software updates often contain critical patches and protections against security threats. That's why it's important to update your system, browser, and apps regularly. We've recently seen an increase in fraud attempts involving members who are using outdated computer systems. Older operating systems (like Windows 10 or earlier macOS versions) no longer receive security updates-and that leaves gaps criminals can exploit.

Why Outdated Systems Put You at Risk

Every day, fraudsters look for ways to steal personal and financial information. Modern operating systems (OS) get regular security updates that protect against these threats. But when your OS no longer receives updates:

  • Known vulnerabilities go unpatched.
  • Hackers can more easily install malware or steal data.
  • Your browser, antivirus, and banking apps may not work properly and securely.

That’s why it’s important to update the software on your computer, tablet, and mobile phone as soon as a newer version becomes available.

How This Affects Your Account Security

Maps Credit Union and other financial institutions use multiple layers of protection to help detect and prevent unauthorized activity, but device security also plays an important role. Outdated devices can make it easier for scammers to target login credentials and personal information through:

  • Phishing pages designed to look like trusted sites
  • Software that records keystrokes
  • Malicious or fake update prompts
  • Unsecured network connections

Keeping your system up to date adds an extra layer of protection when shopping online or accessing your accounts.

Keeping Your System Up to Date

Updating your operating system and software helps protect against known security issues.

1. For Windows:

  • Go to Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update
  • Choose Check for Updates and install

2. For macOS:

  • Open the Apple menu → System Settings → Software Update
  • Install if available

If your device no longer supports updates, upgrading to a newer system is the most straightforward long-term solution.

What to Do If You Can’t Upgrade Your Computer

If replacing your computer isn't an option right now, there are still safer ways to access your accounts. If your device no longer supports updates and you can't upgrade to a newer system:

1. Use a Secure Mobile Device Instead

Smartphones and newer tablets typically receive updates longer than old laptops or desktops. Using an up-to-date phone or tablet to access online banking is safer than using an outdated computer.

  • iPhone and iPad with current iOS
  • Android devices running recent security patches

2. Access Online Banking Only on Trusted Networks

Avoid using public or unsecured Wi-Fi when managing finances. If you must use Wi-Fi in public, use your phone's mobile hotspot instead.

3. Keep Antivirus and Browsers Updated

Even on older machines, keeping antivirus software and web browsers up to date adds another layer of defense.

Secure Your Home Wi-Fi Network

Your router is the access point between your devices and the internet. If malware infects any device on your home network, it can spread to other devices on the same network. To secure your network:

  • Don’t use the default router name and password. Many routers ship with standard credentials that are easy to guess. Creating a unique password adds an important layer of protection.
  • Use strong Wi-Fi encryption. Use the strongest Wi-Fi security your router supports (often listed as WPA2 or WPA3).
  • Keep your router’s software up to date. Router updates fix security issues the same way computer updates do.
  • Limit connected devices. Remove devices you no longer use and avoid connecting unknown devices to your network.
  • Use a separate network for guests. A guest network keeps visitors’ devices from accessing your primary devices and data.
  • Restart your router occasionally. Rebooting can help apply updates and clear temporary issues.
